Definition
Ecthyma is a skin infection similar to impetigo. It is often called “deep impetigo” because it occurs deep inside the skin.
Overview, Causes, & Risk Factors
Ecthyma is most often caused by the bacteria streptococcus. Sometimes, staphylococcus bacteria causes this skin infection.
The infection may start in skin that has been injured due to a scratch or insect bite. It often develops on the legs.

Ecthyma
Ecthyma is a skin infection similar to impetigo, but more deeply invasive. Usually caused by a streptococcus infection, ecthyma goes through the outer layer (epidermis) to the deeper layer (dermis) of skin, possibly causing scars.
Ecthyma gangrenosum
This picture shows a skin infection (ecthyma) that has eroded through the top layer of skin (epidermis). Ecthyma gangrenosum is a bacterial skin infection (caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa) that usually occurs in people with�a compromised�immune system.
